Nearly every one of us, nearly everywhere, lives in a branded world, where the idea of a thing is nearly as important as the thing itself. That has led to some of us to treat sentiment as an object, to want to create an assembly line for branded thoughts and decisions, and funnel them through. But capturing the intangible isn’t about manufacturing and commoditizing emotional connections. It’s about accessing the actual, authentic meaning between the stuff you make and the stuff we want. Why do we spend so much time and energy on psychographics, demographics, buying patterns and market-testing? Is it about highly-competitive profit-mongering? Or is it deeply passionate customer relationship building? It’s all perception.
